Simple answer, yes cigarettes are extremely bad for your health but surprisingly so is sitting. Recent studies show that sitting for more than 8 hours a day with no physical activity gives you a risk of dying similar to the risks of dying posed by obesity and smoking. Long term sitters can expect to see an increase in blood pressure, high blood sugar, and excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels.
However, I have some good news....The negative effects of sitting for long periods of time are almost completely taken away if you get at least 60 minutes of physical activity in a day.
